ODPi Announces Egeria for Open Sharing, Exchange and Governance of Metadata

On August 27, ODPi announced Egeria, the industry’s first open metadata standard, to help organizations better understand, manage and gain value from data. The news was announced from Open Source Summit North America in Vancouver, supporting the free flow of metadata between different technologies and vendor offerings. ODPi Egeria enables organizations to locate, manage and use their data more effectively.

Egeria is built on open standards and available under an Apache 2.0 license. The ODPi Egeria project creates a set of open APIs, types and interchange protocols to allow all metadata repositories to share and exchange metadata. From this common base, it adds governance, discovery and access frameworks for automating the collection, management and use of metadata across an enterprise. The result is an enterprise catalog of data resources that are transparently assessed, governed and used in order to deliver maximum value to the enterprise.

ODPi members and key contributors shared their perspective in the Egeria press release:

“A consistent view on data across the entire landscape is essential for any organisation that wants to become data driven. Not just where the data is, but also the quality, the ownership, and the full lineage across the entire set of technologies used,” said Ferd Scheepers, chief information architect, ING. “The open metadata standard delivered by Egeria delivers this consistent view across all the technologies, while reducing the cost of metadata capture, and the management challenges of working with various data tool vendors.”

“As a leader in advanced analytics, SAS understands the value of full transparency related to data provenance and governance,” said Craig Rubendall, vice president of Platform R&D, SAS. “Egeria and its open approach to metadata management and integration only underscores further the need for metadata standards to promote responsible data exchange across varied technology environments.”

“Changing the availability and the quality of metadata will in turn improve the agility of the data scientist, as well as the transparency of the results they produce,” said Mandy Chessell, distinguished engineer and master inventor, IBM. “Egeria simplifies metadata capture and management to create a consistent view of data across all tools an organization may use.”

ODPI Member Spotlight: Interview with Scott Gnau, Chief Technology Officer, Hortonworks

The success that ODPi has achieved as a nonprofit organization committed to simplification and standardization of the big data ecosystem is driven by the dedication of our member organizations and individuals. In July, ODPi published the first interview in a series of conversations with key ODPi contributors, exploring why they participate in ODPi.

The conversations help us to learn more about the individuals whose efforts are accelerating the development of today’s Big Data ecosystem, standards and solutions.

ODPi sat down with Scott Gnau, chief technology officer of Hortonworks to discuss his involvement with ODPi and what value Hortonworks gains from being an active member. Scott has spent his entire career in the data industry, and as Chief Technology Officer for Hortonworks he is currently responsible for the overall technology vision for Hortonworks, overseeing the company’s Engineering, Product Management and Support organizations.

ODPi Hosts Open Metadata & Governance Workshop at Open Source Summit

ODPi kicked off Open Source Summit North America this year with an Open Metadata & Governance Workshop in Vancouver to celebrate the launch and announcement of Egeria. The day began with an introduction to Egeria, as industry leaders from ODPi provided an overview of Egeria and the goals of the project. Demonstrations showcased Egeria and Apache Atlas in action before taking a deep dive into the Egeria code.

After lunch, attendees were given a preview of the Egeria roadmap and a discussion of next steps for the new open industry metadata standard. Participants were then welcomed to share their own ideas and needs during a collaboration and brainstorming session.

Later in the evening, the workshop wrapped up and we ended the day with a Meet the Experts social as attendees enjoyed beer, pizza, posters, demos and whiteboards. A special thank you to our presenters, participants, and in particular to IBM and ING for sharing their demos of Egeria in action!

Big Data Developers Meetup in NYC: Managing Your Metadata with Project Egeriam

ODPi hosted a Big Data Developers in NYC meetup at the ING offices in NYC on September 11 to continue outreach on the launch of Project Egeria. Attendees filled the room to network and learn about the new ODPi initiative and how Egeria supports the flow of metadata between different technologies and tools.

Attendees were eager to learn how Egeria enables organizations to locate, manage and use their data more effectively. ODPi’s experts were joined on stage by host and presenter Mike Nicpan, who spoke to the need for open metadata from his perspective as an Information Architect at ING.

For those who couldn’t attend, the presentation slides are saved on GitHub. Thank you to ING for hosting the event and providing such a fabulous space for our meetup.
