Re: ODPi BI & Data Science SIG

Hello All BI & DS SIG members!

Can’t believe we have already 2 more than weeks since we enter 2018! Over the past few weeks, I got chances to talk to some of you regarding to the direction of how this SIG should run this year after gathering some lessons learnt from 2017.

One thing I would like to propose after listening to different opinions is: instead this group researches and compiles the publication ourselves, we come up with a list of hot questions for vendors so that they can respond independently. This way we don’t need to restrict ourselves to certain meeting times and most of the editing can be done offline. But before we confirm with this approach, I would like to have a call to touch base with all of you.

Please select the date when you can attend this: https://doodle.com/poll/yquta9y9c73ewizz

Thanks,

Hello All:

Some members cannot join yesterday’s call due to conflict but I would like to summarize the meeting regarding to the planning session of our next publication:

1) We have more BI Vendors participation in this release, including MicroStrategy and Qlik. We want more vendors to contribute the content for a balanced voice and hence please share the news of this SIG and have them contact me directly for any question.

2) Potential topics to explore:
- Comparison of different BI/SQL Connector including Hive, Presto, Impala… etc
- Best practice for BI tool to connect to both Hadoop and RDBMS
- Recommended BI architecture to query Hadoop
- How does BI running advanced analytics including Machine Learning algorithm on Hadoop?

3) We will follow the same communication pattern as we have so far: using email unless it is necessary to be on a call to avoid wasting too much time on meeting

4) In the next 4 weeks, we will discuss through email and will confirm the topic to work on as our next publication.

I keep the bigger Technical group here for information only. For those who are interested to join this effort, please let me know so that you can be included in the BI & Data Science SIG for further communication, which may include only the SIG.
